Stay Healthy This Season: Tips for Cold, Flu, COVID and RSV

As winter settles in, more time indoors and children returning to school increase the spread of cold, flu, RSV, COVID and other respiratory illnesses. Penobscot Valley Hospital encourages everyone to take simple steps to stay healthy during this busy season:

  1. Practice Good Hygiene

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  1. Cover Coughs and Sneezes

Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow to prevent spreading germs. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash your hands.

  1. Support Your Immune System

Eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables. Stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Manage stress to help your body stay strong.

  1. Stay Home if You’re Sick

If you, or your children feel unwell, stay home to recover, and reduce the risk of spreading illness to others. If you are sick and need to go out in public, wearing a mask assists with preventing transmission of the virus to others in the community.

  1. Talk to Your Primary Care Physician

Your primary care provider can help you monitor your health and well-being throughout the year. Consider discussing whether a flu and COVID vaccine is right for you or your family as an added layer of protection.

  1. Know When to Seek Care

While many children experience high fever with common illnesses, it doesn’t always require medical attention. However, if the fever is unusually high, persistent, or accompanied by severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, or dehydration, it’s important to seek care from a healthcare provider. For our elderly population, please consult with your primary care provider if you are sick. You know you, and your family, the best!

By following these tips and staying proactive about your health, you can help reduce the spread of illness and enjoy a healthier winter.
